The 7th grade students presented their Famous Kansan projects to grades K-5 today to celebrate Kansas Day!

Our fun started this week learning about pioneers traveling westward to Kansas. We discussed several “Little House in the Big Woods,” by Laura Ingall Wilder read aloud books throughout the week. We compared and contrasted, discussed what life was like back then comparing to life today. We explored the globe and found Pepin, Wisconsin; NewYork, and Kansas. On Wednesday, we aged to 100 years, had fun counting to 100 with many different activities throughout the day (most of it had to do with food) 😉 Students were well on their way to writing 100 words but hands tired at 60. They want to finish the last 40 at another time. Students made pretty sunflowers with Mrs. Funk in library. Then, watching a scientific video on how butter is made, completing the scientific hypotheses and shaking butter in jars rather than churning it with a dasher, like the pioneers. Students had a mid morning snack by taking a nibble out of a rectangle graham cracker, shaping it to resemble the State of Kansas. They finished their snack while reading and coloring the booklet about other Kansas symbols. We sang, "Home on the Range" and used our five senses by seeing, touching, tasting, hearing and measuring Kansas ingredients to bake bread in the Bread Machine rather than an open fire oven. Finally, the day ended with Mrs. Brickell's class coming over to celebrate the twins birthday and having a warm slice of Kansas bread, butter and honey.
