We have a positive case of COVID in our elementary school. The district is closely working with the health department and contact tracing is currently underway. We have contacted families of any student possibly exposed and needing to remain home while health officials finalize their investigation. Please be aware numbers in the county have slightly increased in the past few days. I encourage you to be watching for symptoms. As usual, please keep your child home and contact your health care provider or our health department if symptoms occur.
Thank you, once again, for your amazing support of our students during this pandemic. Due to our collective efforts, we have successfully had students in school three quarters. Keep up the great work through the end of the year.

The track meet scheduled for April 1st at McLouth has been moved to April 9th. The district calendar should now show the change.

JCNHS Girls BB Highlight video link. This is a great bunch of girls. First 11 games we were 5-6 Last 11 games we were 9-2 with overtime loss in substate championship game. This group showed a lot of character and toughness. No matter what the score was you could not count them out of any game. They grew so much over the season. I am so proud of them. Hopefully, they learned more than basketball as well.

The High School is sponsoring its annual food drive for the Pantry of Hope in Nortonville. It will run until Thursday, March 4th.
While the ultimate goal is to do this for a good cause, the Student Council is still hosting a competition for it. The class with the average highest points per student (the total amount of points the class has divided by the number of students in the grade) will win a prize. See the attached list for points.
Both cash and nonperishable items are accepted, so send in food with a high school student if you can. Thank you!

I've always told my chemistry students that my favorite element in the world is Silver! This week we are performing a five day lab during which (the first day) we will be growing silver crystals. The sad thing is that during day two we react those beautiful silver crystals with nitric acid, and produce silver nitrate...which is no where near as pretty. These pictures show the silver crystals growing on a copper wire. The time lapse YouTube video is condensed down from two hours of actual video. (If anyone is curious, this lab is all about stoichiometry!!)

Mrs. Deviney’s 1st grade did an experiment to see how different types of drinks affect the shell of an egg. We soaked four eggs for seven hours in soda, fruit juice, milk & water. We learned the enamel of our teeth is similar to an egg’s shell. The soda & fruit juice stained the egg shell & made the shell weaker. We were able to brush off some of the stain. The milk make the shell harder to crack. The water did not show any change to the shell. We had fun making a hypothesis & seeing if our prediction was true.

Attention Parents!!!!!!!! The order code for class picture packets that went home have the wrong order code. Inter-state Studio had a system problem that required them to change our school's order code from the forms that went out. Please see "News" on our website for further information regarding the next week of games. We will be easing into (and also continually evaluating) to ensure we are able to provide social distancing as expected, while helping get the community back to participation. Mask wearing remains an expectation at KSHSAA events. Thank you!

Snow packed highways and county roads can still use attention. Today, will be a snow day at JCN.

The physics students are starting a unit on momentum, and what better way than to do our Egg Drop project. They get two sheets of paper and 1 meter of masking tape. They are to design a device that will protect the egg from the impact resulting from a drop from one, then two, then three, then four meters. The ultimate goal is to have the egg survive from the top of the high school gym (about 9 meters). So far this year, four of them have survived the first four falls and are ready to go to the top! A variety of designs have been attempted, and here are a couple of pictures of the process…and the results.
Here are a few videos and pictures of what they have done.

Because of the chance of snow later Tonights Game times at Rossville have been moved up. Varsity Girls will start at 4:30 followed by Varsity Boys. In the other gym JV Boys will start at 4:30 followed by JV Girls.

We will be in session today, Tuesday, January 26. Roads are snow covered but passable. Use caution on highways, there are some patchy snow packed spots. We can do this! Be safe and learn well, students.

Good afternoon, this is Denise Jennings with your local weather update here in JCN country: Yes, there is sleet and slush on the roads but the forecast for drop in temperatures is not until later this afternoon. So, we are staying the course. We will be in school the rest of the afternoon. I have been on the roads the past hour and they are actually getting better instead of worse with salt treatment taking place on highways. I am cancelling all after school activities. Our buses and students will pull out of the parking lots promptly at 3:20. That will be a 5-10 minute lead time from normal.
Again, we are staying in school (sorry students!). We will have all students leaving the parking lot at 3:20. All evening activities are cancelled.
Have a good evening and be safe.

For those of you watching the news for school closings, give up. Wake the kiddos! We are going to school today. Roads, parking lots, windshields are just wet. Temperatures are supposed to remain above 32 degrees. I will continue to monitor snow accumulation and roads today. Be safe.

In chemistry, the students created supersaturated solutions of Sodium acetate trihydrate the other day. After letting the solutions cool down overnight, they performed a few different “treatments”; either pouring the solution onto a plate, dropping a seed crystal into the flask, or even writing with the solution. The results were pretty dramatic….and pretty neat!

Good morning, JCN. Needless to say, I ‘m NOT a weatherman. I’ve been on roads on our northern in for the last hour. Roads and parking areas are beginning to turn white. MS Girls Basketball Game Cancelled Tonight 😕
Thursday, Dec. 3rd
Due to NEKL Tournament beginning this Sat., this game will not be made up this season.

The USDA announced a while back, we will have FREE meals (breakfast and lunch) through the end of the school year! Originally, they had thought the funding may not be available after December. I hope your child/children is/are taking advantage of FREE meals provided by our dedicated food service team. I apologize for being delayed in announcing this great news! I hope this continues to reduce financial burdens during these trying times. If he/she hasn't been, your student may pick up a grab-and-go breakfast to take to their classroom in the morning to begin taking advantage of this program.

Between introducing freezing point depression (we called it "making ice cream") in chemistry, an excellent mini-concert (really sorry...no pics, but great music), and Jenny Cox teaching us line dancing (thank you Jenny!!) ....I'd say we had a pretty great Day Before Thanksgiving Break! I am always amazed at the level of student participation at JCNHS...and they did it again! We have great kids. Hope you all have a great (and safe) Thanksgiving!!!

JCN Families,
As you are hearing some Kansas schools are closing for the semester, at JCN we have many students returning from recent quarantines. Our positivity rate also fell yesterday to 1.1% (down from 1.8%) and then fell again today to 0.9%. Utilizing our gating criteria, the board of education determined under 2.5% positivity rate would remain green…. with considerations. There may be times when we are unable to staff classrooms or bussing, for example. In those cases, we would need to make adjustments to best address learning.
In Jefferson County superintendents, health department and emergency management meet weekly. We review data and discuss the current situation. As you know, our state and county numbers are at a high rate currently. However, school spread has been extremely minimal so far. Our mask wearing, distancing, hand washing, cleaning, etc. are working. You can assist us in keeping students in school by following these safety measures outside of school. Your precautions may also help prevent the flu, strep throat, etc. These illnesses typically cause us issue in the upcoming months with absences.
We will continue to monitor for further spikes in the virus. We may move to more precautionary measures such as less lunchroom numbers, reducing activities, etc. as part of a yellow phase. As we proceed, I think we can all agree our work with students and instruction is much stronger in person. We are aiming to be in school through Thanksgiving and hopefully through the end of the year. If a need would arise warranting moving to remote learning, we will do our best to give preschool through 8th grade parents a minimum of five days notice.
Keep monitoring for symptoms and exposures. Letting others know when you are sick, is critical in slowing our community spread. We appreciate your support.

MS Girls Basketball Tonight Postponed (Monday, Nov. 16)
We will be looking at reschedule dates for our matchup with McLouth

My apologies. We will be slightly delayed with our COVID information while we work with our website host to add to our website. In the meantime, here are today's numbers of COVID cases at JCN. It also shows our quarantined numbers through yesterday. We are still investigating yesterday's new cases and will adjust quarantined numbers as they are updated through the health department. Watch our app/website over the next few days as we add new, helpful information.

We have a couple more positive cases of COVID, one in our elementary building and one in our middle school. Again any possible exposure would have taken place last week. We have contacted families of any student needing to remain home tomorrow while health officials finalize their investigation and contact parents.
At this point, I realize we are all much more concerned over the operation of school. So far the cases I have reported appear to have started in the community and then, unknowingly, created exposure at school prior to symptoms beginning. We have another few days to see if the cases from last week (and primarily Halloween weekend) spread further. Hopefully, our quarantining students will be the necessary mitigation of spread.
If anyone in your household is experiencing any symptoms related to the COVID virus, please take the necessary precautions. I so appreciate the families of these students reaching out to us immediately and keeping their students home this week. By doing so, our quarantine list remains smaller.
Tomorrow, we will be adding information to our website to share our current number of cases as well as quarantines. We will also add other important information reviewing our plans if numbers continue to rise. We do want to keep students in school but are continuously reviewing data to maintain safety in doing so.
I want to thank you all for your work during this unsettling time. Keep positive and healthy!

MS Girls Basketball Tonight (Monday, 11/9) is Postponed to be rescheduled at a later date.

We have a couple more positive cases of COVID at our High School. Any possible exposure would have taken place early last week.
Please note: If you are being told you are exposed by someone, please stay home. Kansas officials are currently responding to consistently high number of cases the past few days so they are overloaded with calls to make. They are working to get notifications accomplished as promptly as possible. We can do our part to help by notifying others once you receive a positive result so they are alerted and stay home and by following our preventive measures. Thank you all for your effort during this time.

We have an additional positive case of COVID-19 at our High School, though it is unrelated to the first case. It had low impact on others.
We also have our first case at the Middle School level. Any possible exposure would have taken place early this week. The district is closely working with the health department and contact tracing is currently underway. We have contacted families of any student possibly exposed at school and needing to remain home while health officials finalize their investigation and contact parents. Please be aware with the increased numbers within our county, KDHE will also be helping our county make phone calls.
Our county and neighboring counties have seen a large increase in numbers this week. We are working to keep our schools open and appreciate your assistance in monitoring for symptoms and notifying us of any positive results. Together, our efforts will get us through this difficult time.
Good luck JCNHS Football. You can follow them on Facebook live-streaming at Lyndon USD 421. The game will begin shortly.

The HS Financial Aid meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.

Friday's Football game at Lyndon will be live-streamed on their Facebook page. Go to Lyndon USD 421 to find it.

We have a positive case of COVID-19 at our High School. Any possible exposure would have taken place last week. The district is closely working with the health department and contact tracing is currently underway. The county health officer is considering distancing as well as mask wearing within low risk activity prior to quarantining students. While there is low risk in exposure with masks and/or distancing, we do recommend you continue typical monitoring for signs and symptoms of COVID. We have contacted families of any student needing to remain home tomorrow while health officials finalize their investigation and contact parents.
We will continue to monitor this situation closely in the days ahead and will evaluate if there are further cases and/or a need to move from our current green level. As we continue monitoring this situation, we will notify families if any additional actions need to be taken in the near future.
Again, this case is connected to the high school building only.

Do you know what happens when you combine 100 toothpicks, a little glue, and a lot of thought? A "bridge" in our physics classes! As an introduction to forces, each student built a bridge. These were some of the most creative, thoughtful designs that I have seen in a while! The winner???? Cole Burk! His bridge held 110lbs before breaking! 30% of the bridges help 40lbs or more. Nice job, you guys!!

My chemistry classes are getting ready to do a lab in which we determine the empirical formula for Magnesium Oxide. The lab has to be carried out in a controlled reaction, so that the magnesium doesn't burn. To show the students why we wouldn't be able to get any good data from the uncontrolled combustion of magnesium, I let them burn a few small strips of magnesium. They were warned to NOT look directly at the flame. We did turn off the lights (once, and very carefully!!!!) to see the how bright the reaction was in a dark room. Fun times in chemistry ;-)

The number of free lunches determines additional funding for school districts. These dollars assist us in providing additional services for students. If you might qualify but have not completed the application, it is important for us to have your food service application tomorrow. You will find the application under parent resources on our website. Or, please call any of our buildings and we will get one to you. We will serve meals free of charge until the money runs out.... our Kansas State Department of Education is estimating this may continue through December, 2020. On Tuesday, we may need to vary our menu slightly to cover the meals for ALL children. Breakfast will include morning preschoolers. I hope this news brings relief to many of you trying to get back on your feet from the past few months. I want to give a special "shout out" to the JCN food service cooks that have done an amazing job with adapting and working tirelessly to feed our JCN students!!

Go Chargers!!!!

I'm pleased to announce we are in GREEN for starting school tomorrow. Our county COVID data from today shows Jefferson County with a decreasing trend. Less than 5% of COVID testing is positive, currently. And, even better, the JCN district's boundaries have ZERO active cases. This information was provided by our county health officer.

Reminder
Primary Parents (K-2) remember the school supply drop off from 5:30-6:30 tonight. Teachers will have tables for a drive by drop off on the west side of the building where our bus line is.
Welcome Back 2020!!!!!

Bus routes are being finalized and you should be hearing from your driver soon, if you haven't already, regarding your pickup and drop off times. Here is our list of transportation COVID adjustments for starting the year. Thank you for the opportunity to get your students back to school! We are eager to have them back. More information regarding more school plans will be coming out over the next couple of days. We appreciate your patience as we have been working the past week to organize and prepare.

Our school nurse, Melissa Erpelding, will be in the buildings this week on Thursday, August 20. If your child needs a medication during school hours, it would be helpful for her to prepare for the year ahead, if you could drop off the medicine in its original container on Thursday. You may bring the medicine to either the EMS office or the HS office. Melissa and/or the secretaries will ensure paperwork is completed so we have everything in order when school begins on Tuesday.

K-2 parents - Please plan to drop off your primary student’s school supplies on Monday, August 24th, from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm in the front drive of the EMS. This will give your student a chance to see their teacher (in a mask) 😉 and drop off their supplies. Everyone must stay inside their vehicles. Please make sure all supplies are labeled & placed inside a disposable bag marked with your child’s name, teacher & grade level. Please send book bags on Tuesday with any other supplies that won’t fit in the paper bag. Hope to see you & your child on Monday!

Reminder: MS Volleyball and Football!
Practice begins tomorrow at 3:15 with participants viewing the mandatory concussion video before official practice begins at 3:30, at the EMS.

PreK-2nd grade parents - Due to water fountains being shut off this year, please send your child to school with a water bottle. All water bottles must have lids & only contain water. Please label bottles with your child's name. Children will be able to fill their water bottles at the refill stations. If questions, please contact your child's teacher.

Teachers are back and we are busy at JCN! In our conversations and planning, we have been reviewing the "Bright Spots" from the end of last year and in our current conditions. New technology and learning adaptability are two significant ones.
I'm pleased to announce we have partnered with Florida Virtual School and will be delivering lessons for our remote learners utilizing their extensive course offerings. To support all learners, our JCN teachers will outline local objectives and select lessons to keep our remote learners in line with our classrooms and connected with our in-person students.
Teachers will also be using some lessons from Florida Virtual School within classrooms to reinforce learning for in-person students. Preparing all students for the possibility of a quarantine time when we need to adapt to learning from home. (though, hopefully, not needed!)
More information to come as we learn about the system!

Just a Reminder that our first 1/2 day of school is coming up on Tuesday, August 25th, AM only. Lunch will be served.

It sounds as though some of you haven't received your enrollment envelope in the mail yet. I have added my letter to the Enrollment folder under Parent Resources on the website and app. Please see "Welcome back letter 2020" and "Questions and Answers". To begin online enrollment refer to "Instructions -Creating a Guardian account in PowerSchool". Once you have a guardian account, you may log in and click on Enrollment on the left hand side. NOTICE: The USD 339 Return To School Plan and August, 2020 calendar is available on our website under news and Parent Resources.

The JCN Board of Education met today and have voted to delay the start of school for students by one week. Staff will report as scheduled. The first half day of school will be August 25th (K-9th) and the first full day of school August 26th (K-12th). Preschool will begin August 31st. The delay will provide staff, teachers, and administrators additional time at the beginning of the year to prepare for opening doors with preventive measures in place. Our reopening plan will be out on Monday providing us a framework for the year. I look forward to providing many, many specifics as we work through the next few weeks of this worldwide pandemic.
We will be working to revise our August calendar and get that out quickly as well. We are planning to open online enrollment at the end of next week. We will have our planned in-person enrollment as scheduled, August 4th, if you would like assistance with the process. You will receive a letter next week explaining enrollment and further explaining your opportunities for educating your children this year with JCN. Thank you for being a JCN Charger!

More information to come in the next few days..... but in the meantime, don't panic. As you listen to the news and wait anxiously to hear about schools reopening, masks, etc. Give this a bit more time. We will be sharing our reopening plan next week. We will have options that I believe will help many of you feel better about the school year. I realize the "roller coaster" seems like a runaway train but learning remains our JCN goal and we will help your children continue to learn face-to-face or through a remote manner.

As a kid I loved roller coasters, but as an adult life feeling like a roller coaster is not nearly as much fun. I realize the last time I spoke with you, I said the Governor had delayed schools. While many of you may have been relieved, others may have been quite concerned. Recently, I gave an opinion that a delay of 4 or 5 days would be helpful to ensure our orders have arrived and our best plans are in place. I wanted to reach out and let you know if the State Board decides to reject her mandate, we will be ready for your children. If they support her mandate, the JCN teachers and administration will be on duty each day during the delay planning for our students to return. Teachers will be working to develop remote learning opportunities for students that will need to learn from home during quarantine or high-risk situations. We will be planning for what could be a very interesting year ahead. With teachers on duty, we are able to count half the time as our 1116 hour minimum so if you are afraid we will be attending all next summer, I believe those hours plus swapping some staff development days out of our calendar from later in the year, we can make this work. Most of all, we will be striving for once our doors open, they remain open all year.
I understand this is a very difficult time. Please know the Jefferson County North school community is aiming for making it a quality year. Have a wonderful weekend.

I am so sorry this is such an unsettling time we find ourselves locked into. If you haven’t heard the news, Governor Kelly announced that she will be delaying the reopening of school until after Labor Day. Though this will give our JCN school staff and community time to outline the best plan possible for reopening schools, I realize it comes with extra demands, as well as concerns placed upon each of you. Please know our goal is to get students back to learning as soon as possible. I am eager to gather more information on Monday, as mentioned, and from there we will get to work planning for our opening day. Take care.

School supply lists are also located in Parent Resources under Document (on your App) and under Menu (on your website) for printing purposes. Note: As you shop, please don't stress over items that are not available i.e. hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes. We'll appreciate what you find and can send, but we will understand if supply and demand makes it impossible. I'm working to secure supplies to get us started.

We would appreciate your input on our reopening plans. Please complete the following survey (one per family): https://forms.gle/HAJjeE9uCzfo97x46

Due to the rain, wind, and forecast, we have moved graduation inside this morning. I encourage audience members to bring and wear face masks. We will have some available. Seniors and participants will not be required to wear face masks during the ceremony as we have allowed for physical spacing.

Rain or Shine? Given Kansas weather, it is difficult to forecast the weather for Saturday's Graduation or Tuesday's Promotion. We have planned three options for both occasions: 1st Plan A- Football stadium, outdoor air, social distancing. 2nd Plan B- Short rain delay, Football stadium, same as above. 3rd Plan C- (Rain here to stay), Move inside high school, social distancing, may have some occupancy restrictions.

Summer School Building Schedules: JCN is offering summer school opportunities to improve failing grades in the 4th quarter for MS and HS students. The Governor's Executive Order 20-16 issued this morning. Does not change any of the current directives for schools. We will be able to deliver learning opportunities this week via technology or packets. It continues social distancing of 6 feet. Wishing you all good health.

Hopefully, they won't be needed, but the schools are allowed to be used as typical for a storm shelter. Try to maintain social distancing of 6 feet, if space allows.

Meals were approved! School lunches and breakfasts will begin Thursday, March 19. You may pick up meals at either building from 11-12:00 noon. See "News" for the full information.

Parents, please complete the following survey if possible by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 17. Thank you! https://forms.gle/c8oShpFVCo2QB3a38

Reminder: Due to the County Health Officer closing schools for two weeks and encouraging "social distancing", our buildings are closed for usage other than essential personnel. This includes building usage and the fitness center. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Governor Kelly with the State Dept. of Educ. has recommended schools close in Kansas for one week. Many schools, like JCN, have already closed by order of their local health dept. for that week and more. A task force was established to plan for K-12 needs. See WIBW for more info.

Jefferson County Schools are closed through March 29. See the news release under “News” on this app or our website. We greatly apologize for the inconvenience.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, State FBLA has been cancelled. At this point, our county schools have not been closed for next week. I continue to receive information from our state department and KDHE. Our next conference call is set for tomorrow. I will keep you updated.

JCN Families, with COVID-19 pandemic causing an unprecedented closing of social gatherings, I am closely monitoring recommendations from our state department and KDHE. I will keep you posted on Live Feed and our auto call system as to future decisions.

Zetta Noll also qualified individually for state by placing 8th. Trevor Pentlin took 2nd place overall. Today was a great showing from the kids with many of them running a PR on a tough course. It’s been a great season and we are happy to be able to continue it for another week with so many kids.

Hooray for our State Cross Country runners! They all did an awesome job this morning! Qualifying for State are: Zetta Noll (8th) and Trevor Pentlin (2nd), and the boys team (2nd).
(Sorry for my delay in getting this posted. I was heading back from a fantastic morning with cross country runners to watch Substate Volleyball.)

REMINDER: There will be "NO SCHOOL" Monday, October 28, due to Staff Development/Work Day and Oct. 29, due to Parent Teacher's Conferences.
