MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING
OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF USD 339
HELD ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2009, AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE
WINCHESTER, KANSAS


The regular meeting of the Board of Education of USD# 339 was called to order by Ron Langston at 6:16 p.m. on September 14, 2009 at the District Office in Winchester, Kansas.

Also present were Sharon Porter, Tony Domann, Jim Bodenheimer, Keith Ostrander, Gary Bedigrew, Brandan Giltner, Denise Jennings, Dr. Bill Majors, Tim Marshall, and Susan Coppinger.

Dr. Marshall introduced Dr. Bill Majors, KASB, who facilitated a Board working/goal planning session. He passed out suggested goals and discussed issues facing the district as well as strategies to meet goals.

 

Dr. Majors left the meeting at 7:22 p.m. and Ron Langston called for a recess until 7:30 p.m.

Ron Langston called the meeting back into regular session at 7:30 p.m. and Sharon Porter made a motion to approve the following consent agenda:

A. Approval of the agenda
B. Approval of the minutes of the August 10, 2009 regular meeting
C. Approval of the minutes of the August 17, 20009 special meeting
D. Approval of the August 21, 2009 bills Warrant No. 11156 – 11164 = $4,635.65
E. Approval of the September 10, 2009 payroll Warrant No. 11165 – 11200 and Direct Deposit No. 11594 – 11672 = $282,020.99
F. Approval of the September 14, 2009 bills Warrant No. 11205 - 11299 = $593,060.41

Motion seconded by Tony Domann. Motion carried 5 - 0.

There were no additional written communications or any communications from patrons present.

In the absence of Karen Edmonds, Tim Marshall presented the Keystone Learning Services report.

Reports of Administration:

Gary Bedigrew reviewed and updated on high school happenings: FBLA; MAP & State test dates; Robotics Camp; Scholar Bowl; Senior Project; Thespians; KU Honors Banquet; HS math classes; Homecoming events; athletics & activities.

Denise Jennings reviewed and updated on elementary happenings: Meet the Teacher Night; Parent’s Night and learning opportunities for staff members.

Brandan Giltner reviewed and updated on MAP assessment testing; transportation updates; and middle school athletics and activities.

In addition to his written report, Dr. Marshall reported that DVL passes were available for check-out in the district office; there is discussion of numbers of coaches needed for athletic sports depending on numbers of student participants; upcoming MTSS training for staff members and a reminder that the H1N1 flu virus is likely showing up in some of our staff and students and to be aware of health guidelines set forth by KDHE.

Old Business: 

There was no old business for discussion

New Business:

(Contracts) Sharon Porter made a motion to approve signed contracts as presented; motion seconded by Jim Bodenheimer. Motion carried 5 – 0.


(Misc. Items) Dr. Marshall reminded Board members to “save the date” October 21 for the KASB Fall Regional meeting in Lenexa and the KASB Conference December 4, 5, 6 in Overland Park. He also reminded members of the Watch & Talk program and discussion “Reading, Writing and the Future of Education for Kansas Kids” airing statewide on all Kansas PBS stations sponsored by the Kansas Learning First Alliance and KTWU TV 11.


Ron Langston adjourned the meeting at 8:25 p.m.
