Low brass band students from Jefferson County North middle and high schools are now members of a Guinness World Record for the largest tuba ensemble. Since 2008, the Kansas City Symphony has hosted hundreds of tuba and euphonium players for Tuba Christmas held at the Kaufmann Center for Performing Arts for two performances each year. For 2018, the Symphony was ready to up the ante by combining all players into one date at the Municipal Arena and go for a Guinness World Records title attempt. The previous record was 502 performers. On December 7th, the record was broken with 835 tuba and euphonium players. The JCN students rehearsed in the morning and presented a concert at noon that was open to the public. The JCNHS band seniors, along with several parents of the performers, were able to witness the concert and record-breaking moment. Thank you to Mrs. Shawn Gigstad for sponsoring and to Mrs.Cathleen Hunter for maneuvering a large bus in downtown Kansas City’s heavy traffic. Students performing included Trevor Lindsey, Boyd Tweed, Anthony Larson, Tom Sharp, Connor Keirns on tuba and Eve Smith, Eli Weishaar, Lane Edmonds, Caleb McAfee, Ryan Feldkamp and Caden Thompson on euphonium/baritone.
