On Saturday, December 5, 2009, six JCN band students participated in the District I Northeast Kansas Honor Band held at Blue Valley High School in Stillwell, Kansas. Students’ names were sent into the festival coordinator and a committee decided which instrumentation was needed. Mrs. Gigstad and the students left the high school at 6:30 a.m. with a much needed doughnut stop in McLouth!
8th grade students selected were Molly Bassette, flute; Ty Brickell, trombone; and Nicole Ellerman, French horn. Students performing in the 9th grade band were Alex Schneider, clarinet; Kymee Noll, trumpet; and Shane Noll, tuba. Each band rehearsed with a very capable clinician the entire morning. A concert was held for the public that afternoon with each band performing three selections. Our students were able to play with other fine musicians from the entire northeast area of our state. Both bands were very well prepared and presented a very enjoyable concert.
Congratulations to these students who gave up a Saturday in order to be a part of an “extra” music education opportunity.
