Girls' BB Team advanced to State, placed 4th

by Coach Noll

The 2009-10 High School Girls Basketball team consisted of twenty-one players and four managers. This group of girls continued to build on the success of the last couple of years. The combined record of the Varsity, JV and Freshmen was 45 wins and 10 losses.  This year’s team consisted of Seniors Beth Anne Brickell, Mallory GrandPre, and Sara Navinskey.  Juniors Anna Kern, Katie Noll, Gage Funk, Kay Irvine, Luise Bellgardt and Kelsey Deviney.  Sophomores Kate Brickell, Jordan Kramer, Mary Kern, Emma Bassette, Kim Cooper and Megan Domann. Freshmen Kymee Noll, Morgan Wentz, Brandy Crail, Ariel Peterson, and Katelyn Tomlinson.  Our managers were Jeana Eddy, Katie Twenhafel, Katie Parkey, and Chrissy Lane.

This year’s team experienced a lot of success during the season.  We won the DVL Pre-Season Tournament for the third consecutive year.  Since there will be no DVL Tournaments in the future,  our girls will have won the final three league tournaments.  We also won our Jefferson County North Invitational for the second year in a row. We also took second place in the DVL regular season.  The Varsity went into our sub-state seeded #1 with a 19-1 record and had to come from behind in the sub-state championship game against Marysville to win our sub-state.

From there we headed to the 3A state tournament in Hutchinson for the first time in 23 years.  The girls were able to defeat Frontenac in the first round and then lost a one point heart breaker to Marion 42-41 in the state semi-finals and lost to Garden Plain in the consolation game.  We ended up placing 4th in class 3A.

As a team it was a very successful year.  We also had a number of individuals recognized for their playing ability throughout the season.   Jordan Kramer was named All-State by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, Topeka Capital Journal, and the Wichita Eagle.  She was also a unanimous selection to the DVL all league team, and named the area player of the year by the Atchison Globe.   Sara Navinskey and Mallory GrandPre were named to the DVL first team All League, Atchison Globe first team All Area and the Topeka Capital Journal All State Honorable mention teams.  Kate Brickell was named to the Wichita Eagle All State Honorable mention team and Katie Noll was named to the DVL All league Honorable Mention and the Atchison Globe All Area Honorable Mention teams.

Overall this was a very enjoyable year that will be remembered for a long time.  I would like to thank Tonya Kramer and Teresa Webb for being my assistants this year and Rick McFarland for keeping our scorebook. Also I would like to thank the parents who prepared meals and provided snacks to the team. Last but not least I want to thank everyone from the booster club (snacks for state tournament) to the local businesses (sponsoring JCN Invitational) to the school board (providing rooms at state tournament) for helping make the 2009-10 season a very successful one.
