JCNHS qualifiers for the State Track & Field meet in Wichita
The 2010 JCNHS Track & Field Team

High School Track

by Coach O'Neill

Taking 21 athletes to the State Track & Field meet in Wichita was most likely the highlight of the 2010 season.  Both boys and girls teams finished second at the regional meet in St. Marys, qualifying what is likely the largest contingency ever at JCN to the state meet.

The top seven placings at the state meet score points and bring home medals.  Quentin McAfee was the highest placer for JCN, finishing in a tie for 2nd place in Pole Vault.  Quentin was actually in a three-way tie for first at 13ft. 6in., forcing a jump-off for the top spot.  After 5 successive jump-offs, fatigue began to set in, leaving the vaulter from Holcomb as the eventual winner.  The boys 4x800m relay (Cody McMahon, Brett Manville, Nathan Robertson and Spencer Wentz) brought home 7th place medals as well.

Other highlights for the year included winning the DVL team championship for the girls, and team first place finishes for boys and girls at Rossville, and for the girls at Pleasant Ridge.

New Freshman/Sophomore records were set by Colby Kramer in discus (128’ 6”); Kim Cooper in 800m (2:29.33); and the 4x800m Relay (10:37.88) of Mary Kern, Kim Cooper, Jordyn Mize, and Jordan Kramer.  Mary, Kim, and Jordan, along with Tori Lange also broke the varsity 4x800m record at the state meet with a time of 10:18.80.

In addition to the State qualifiers, many other individuals on the team had key performances during the year.  While the top performers are often recognized, it is often the ones who don’t place as high that score enough points to make the difference between the 1st place team at a meet and 2nd or 3rd.  The coaches appreciate the effort of all of our athletes, and the contribution of our managers as well.  I would also like to thank assistant coaches Rich Leakey (hurdles and sprints), Rick McFarland (throwing events), and Jack Moore (jumping events) for their expert contributions this year; as well as the office staff at the HS, administration, and our loyal parents and fans.

A list of the 2010 JCNHS Track and Field team follows, with primary events for the year and individual accomplishments.  We anticipate next year with great enthusiasm- get in the miles this summer!!
