2010 Science Fair

by Rich Leakey

On Wednesday, May 5th, the 12th annual Jefferson County North Middle School Science Fair was held.  This year’s science fair was graced with favorable weather and went on without much adversity.
There were many great exhibits this year.  The students had a good mix of exhibits stemming from earth science, life science and the consumer sciences.  Some of the exhibits included some experiments dealing with electricity and resistance.  Of course, I’m personally partial to DNA experiments.  There were some very good ideas and awesome experiments this year.  What I really enjoy is that the students are allowed to do what they are interested in, which gives the project some ownership, and pride.

This year the eighth- grade had a total of four medals, while the seventh-grade had six medals.  Overall both groups did very well.  The following are medals winners in each class:

8th Grade
Ty Brickell, Heather Polson, Molly Bassette, Sami Twenhafel

7th Grade
Jacinta Priest, Rylie Farrar, Payton Barrett, Hannah Fine, Ethan Hubbard, Ty Jobbins

In closing, I would like to thank everyone who helped make the science fair a success.  If I forget someone, I apologize.  A big thanks goes out to the judges, (Jordan Piha, Arlene Mauzey and Ginger Mauzey-Enright) and the custodians for setting up tables and cleaning up the gym at the conclusion of the science fair.  Thanks to the faculty, especially Mr. Polson and Mrs. Kramer for gym space, and the middle level teachers for constant interruptions of their classes.  Also, thanks to the administration, the parents and especially the students for their hard work and dedication.
