Independent Study and Interactive Distance Learning Benefits Students

By Peggy Mailen

February 01, 2010

Independent study online and correspondence courses began several years ago to expand the learning opportunities for Jefferson County North High School students. The high school courses are purchased from several different course providers including Brigham Young University, North Dakota State University, the University of Nebraska, the University of Missouri, and the American School.  Our district accepts the grading scale of the institution from whom the course is purchased.  All course requirements come from the various institutions.

There are a number of students currently enrolled in independent study.  The following is a partial listing of elective courses that are being taken:  First Aid, Health and Wellness, Business Math, Foods and Nutrition, Psychology, and Preparing for Health Occupations.  In addition, several students this year are taking independent study courses to recover credit for failed courses that are required for graduation.

The Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) classroom was added to supplement the high school’s math curriculum during the fall of 2008. This year eleven students took dual credit Intermediate College Algebra from Highland Community College during the fall semester.  Mrs. Lauren Jacobs taught the course from the HCC site at Perry, Kansas.  The students were able to see and interact with Mrs. Jacobs during class.  She was able to see and hear our students as well.  Many of the students found the course work challenging. Presently, fourteen students are enrolled in the dual credit College Algebra  course taught by Mrs. Jacobs.  The administration is currently looking at other courses to expand the learning opportunities afforded by the IDL classroom.

Independent study courses and Interactive Distance Learning courses provide a good way for self-directed, motivated students to both extend the curriculum and to complete course work.  Good time management skills are a key factor for successful completion of distance learning courses.
