JCNHS Volleyball 2009

I’d like to do something different in the 2009 installation of the volleyball Update article: I am going to take this opportunity to say thank you to a long list of individuals.
First of all, I would like to thank the Charger volleyball community for issuing strong support once again for all of our players. I was encouraged by the fan turnout we had in Wellsville for sub-state and the kind, supportive comments I heard from students and family members to our players and coaches after our season-ending loss. JCN is an excellent place to coach and compete.
I also want to thank the extended JCN volleyball staff, who keeps the machine running year after year. To clock operators, line judges, score keepers, libero trackers, spreadsheet makers, KSHSAA compliance gurus, administrators, cheerleading sponsors—thank you all so, so much. Your unselfish work does not go unappreciated.
The best assistant coaches in the state also deserve many thanks. Lori Navinskey, helping us out in a pinch, provided superb leadership and guidance for our freshman team, and fellow newcomer and junior varsity coach Stephanie Newell also gave our program a boost in many ways, and we hope she will continue to do so in the future. Players of both coaches were lucky to have such outstanding role models. And what can I say about Coach Starr? For four years, I had the good fortune to coach alongside not only an excellent volleyball coach but also a good friend.
Finally, I want to thank our huge graduating class of players and managers. On October 24, a total of eight players and managers participated in their last high school volleyball game. To Sara, Sara, Beth Anne, Molly, and Krista, thank you for the courage and determination you displayed that day and throughout your entire volleyball careers. Your leadership, work ethic, and, most of all, character will be sorely missed. Thanks for carrying the torch with dignity and for showing those that follow how important it is to maintain the standard that has been set at JCN. Without seniors such as yourselves upholding our standards, the players filling your shoes wouldn’t know how to lead, compete, or work. And to Rebecca, Laura, and Jessica, thank you for being there day after day, filling our water bottles, carrying our gear, filming our matches, sweeping our floor, handing us towels—the list goes on and on.
And final-final thank you goes to our underclassmen: To maintain a solid, well-respected, feared program, takes an entire roster of players, not just a senior class or varsity squad. Even though we graduate a talented group, our prospects for next year and beyond remain bright because of your hard work and dedication. Although there is still plenty of work to do (starting in the offseason *smile) you have shown the willingness to compete and put the team before your individual needs. That will go a long way toward continued success for our program.
On November 4, players, managers, coaches, and family members gathered for the Charger Volleyball Awards Banquet, a.k.a. Charger Volleyball All-Starr Banquet. We ate a fantastic potluck dinner, said thank you and goodbye to Coach Starr and Coach Navinskey, and then presented statistical awards and team-voted players of the year awards. Recipients of statistical awards were the following: Kills Leader (326) Jordyne Seichepine; Blocks Leader (56 assist, 7 solo) Kelsey Deviney; Digs Leader (224) Sara Peres; Aces Leader (44) Jordyne Seichepine; Assists Leader (587) Sara Navinskey; Serve Percentage Leader (93.23%) Sara Peres; Passing Leader (1.92/3.0) Sara Peres. The following awards were decided by player votes: Hustle Award, Krista Weishaar; Freshman Player of the Year, Kymee Noll; Junior Varsity Player of the Year, Amy Moore; Offensive Player of the Year, Molly Lyon; Defensive Player of the Year, Sara Peres, Most Inspiration Player, Beth Anne Brickell; Most Valuable Player, Sara Navinskey.
