Call to Order: President Hunter called the meeting to order at 5:35 pm. The committee approved the agenda as presented.

General: Dr. Marshall presented budget information related to Kansas legislators. Dr. Marshall talked to the council about budget cuts. He states we are attempting not to “send people home nor to affect the kids’ instruction.” He informed the council on what the per pupil cuts would actually be for JCN, depending on the outcome of the legislature. He informed us on how the local option budget is used and what percentage it raises for the school. Cuts in energy use, equipment and supplies will be first to be scrutinized. Other ways to cut back will be to pay for only one “slot” at John Dewey, cut busing a bit more with Cathleen driving a route again this year and reducing staff development and staff travel. Extra duty pay and supplementals may also be under the microscope.

Communications: None reported

New Business/Principals’ Report: Dr. Marshall left the meeting at 6:55. Denise proposed to expedite the rest of the meeting. Council members read the reports presented and then answered questions. One question posed was about the head lice policy. Denise shared JCN’s policy and the reasoning behind it.

Athletics: Knowledge Bowl finished their season well.
MS Track has begun.

Transportation: No report

Old Business: Nothing brought up

Miscellaneous:
One council member brought up a concern about the “pay to play” idea circulating in the district. Dr. Marshall dismissed it as a non-issue.

Comments made about the change in middle school cheerleading, with much positive support.

Council returned to transportation and was voicing a concern about long bus rides for the youngest students.

Another patron brought a concern to the council meeting concerning lack of communication. Parents would like to know when assessments are coming up so they can plan accordingly. Another parent brought up a concern about the girls’ locker room.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 pm
