It’s May and the Seniors are Anxious

Times have not changed. May brings Senioritis, although I believe March and April give them a good start. In this article I am going to list some recent and future happenings that have and will occur for the seniors, as well as the rest of the student body.
We sent seventy-seven FBLA students to the State FBLA Leadership Conference in Topeka, Kansas on March 24th and 25th. The conference was very exciting and an eventful trip this year. We placed 17 times and had five events qualify for Nationals. We also have one new JCN state officer; Kandace Irvine is the new Historian.
Senior Projects were presented on April 3rd after a long process that began in September. Some milestones reached were.

State Tests in the subject areas of Math, Reading, and Writing have been completed and we are in the process of taking Science and Social Studies. The seniors achieved the Standard of Excellence in both Math and Reading. The juniors appear, by my calculations, to have also achieved that honor, but the final state results will not be posted until later. The sophomores also appear to have achieved the standard of excellence in Math but won’t take the reading test until next year. The freshmen and sophomores have also taken the National MAP Tests in Reading and Math. I, for one, am extremely proud of the students at JCN.
We have had two fairly important high school dances for students in recent months with the King and Queen of Courts in February and Prom on April 4th. Complete Music DJ’ed both dances in which I believe the students had a great time.
Our North Star Dance Team, Cheerleaders, Boys Cross Country, Girls Cross Country, Volleyball, and Football teams all achieved the honor of receiving the “Distinguished Athletic Achievement Award”. To achieve the KSHSAA Athletic Achievement Award a team or squad must have a grade point average during the season of 3.25-4.00. The winter and spring sports have not completed the application process yet.
The Forensic Team competed in the DVL Tournament on Monday, February 18, 2009 at Jefferson County North High School. JCN finished fourth out of the DVL schools that competed and the following students placed for JCN.
- 1st – Molly Lyon/Emily McFarland – Duet
- 2nd – Laura Wallace - Poetry
- 3rd– Shelby Pyle – Prose
- 3rd – Jessica Benner - Information
- 4th – Laura Flory – Prose
- 6th - Phoenix Hutchinson/Rebecca Jenicke
All 1st through 4th places are qualified for State Competition on May 2nd.
Our high school band has about 92 members this year. They continued their reputation this year by receiving three “I’s” at state competition held at Atchison High School on April 16th.
Some milestones in athletics were as follows:
- Volleyball team wins league, DVL league tournament, and Sub-State and goes to State
- Girls Basketball wins league and DVL league tournament
- Coach Noll gets 100th high school girls basketball win
- Track teams off to a great start.
