JCN Marches with The Luck of the Irish

by Tammy Gigstad

May 05, 2009

For an unprecedented 4th time, the JCNHS band was again asked to march in the Lawrence St. Patrick Day’s parade! Although this parade falls during spring break, 71 students out of a possible 91 gave their time for the performance.

The weather was beautiful as our very “green” band took 2 buses driven by Rick Twenhafel and Jane Naumann and traveled to Lawrence. Rick McFarland drove the truck and trailer loaded with instruments and marching equipment.

The parade route started on Massachusetts Street around 12th Street and traveled north, across the bridge and turned east. The streets were crowded with cheering people happy to watch a parade on such a beautiful day.

Our drum major, Matthew Finley, was awarded the “Best Dressed Adult Male”! He was in full Irish gear with a nice touch of “JCN”. His award consisted of several gift certificates and t-shirts from downtown Lawrence merchants.

The band would like to thank Ruth McFarland and Lori Navinskey for marching with our group. The band always appreciates the support of parents/adults in the role as sponsors on any of our trips or contests.
