A Sneak Peek at Preschool
by Kendra Norris
Just a peek at the preschool class in the last few weeks
The class of 2022 is off to a great start! Jefferson County North Preschool opened their doors on September 2. This school year we have a morning session and an afternoon session. Each preschool session is about 3 hours long five days a week. We have a total of 25 students attending this year.
The students have been very excited to attend school. The first few days we learned and will continue to learn many school procedures such as:
- Raising our hand before we begin speaking, not while we are already speaking
- Realizing we can use the restroom anytime during the day, you don’t have to wait for Mrs. Norris or Mrs. Barnhardt to ask, “Why are you dancing right now?”
- Knowing we won’t always be able to play where we want to and whenever we want to.
- Understanding that Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Barnhardt are supposed to be the ones “in charge” even if we don’t feel like doing what they want us to do.
- Knowing that Mrs. Norris and Mrs. Barnhardt have a name and it is not “teacher” and “hey you! Yeah you!”
After these basic lessons were taught we moved on to a new unit “Me, Myself and I” It has been so much fun to study about ourselves because we know exactly what we are like. We sang many songs learning our body parts. We studied the letters in our names (as far as the children are concerned these are the only letters they need to know!) We talked about our birthdays (because it is one of the most important holidays of the year!). Following this unit we began to learn about friends. (Learning all their names is a lot of work!) It is getting easier now that we play together and learn together each day. We are always singing each other’s names, or working together in small groups. Learning with friends is a lot of fun. We have also discussed fire safety and the letters A, B, C and D. We have parent volunteers that come in each day to help us learn all of these skills. (Some students think that the parents just want to play with our classroom toys, and make our projects). ☺
