JCN Forensics State Bound Again
by Twila Uhler
On May 3, 2008, the JCN Forensics state qualifiers traveled to Wichita for State Champs and Festival. This was the conclusion to a successful season that qualified eight members for state. The state qualifiers for Festival were: senior Callie Barnett, and sophomores Jessica Benner, Rebecca Jenicke. Callie and Jessica received I ratings and Rebecca received a II rating. The state qualifiers for Champs were: juniors Matthew Finley, Emily McFarland, and Shelby Pyle, and sophomores, Molly Lyon, and Laura Wallace. Molly Lyon advanced to semi-finals in her humorous piece, and she and Emily McFarland advanced to finals and received a 6th place for their IDA.
Every year our support system has grown and more and more parents are coming to our tournaments and supporting the team. For the student, this support gives them the satisfaction that what they are doing is worthwhile, and for the parents, it allows them to witness the talent of their child. On our tip to Wichita, Joan Wallace as a sponsor and van driver, Bob and Rita Lyon as our Champs judges, Rick and Ruth McFarland, and Glen, Leah, Lyssia, and Luke Pyle accompanied the team.
Our season had a few bumps along the way with an unusually rough winter. After many cancellations and rescheduling we were able to attend four tournaments plus DVL in Horton. We also sponsored JCN’s third annual tournament on Feb. 23. It has been yet another year where JCN students have set goals, worked hard and exceeded these goals. This dedication has given each student an experience that will benefit them by building confidence in his or her speaking ability, which will be an asset to them as they journey into adulthood.
