Slava Scholar Award

by Tim Marshall, Superintendent

Graduation is always an exciting time. Soon-to-be-former students are in their best dress and on their best behavior. There are always one or two students who like to put on a bit of a show for the crowd, but most are just hoping they make it up and down the stage without tripping in front of our largest annual crowd.

I’m sure I’ve said it before, but I want to say it in the Update. The best show is really in the evening, earlier in the week, in front of a much smaller crowd. Attendance at the senior awards night should be on everyone’s “to do” list. It is truly the seniors’ night to shine. Awards are given for all kinds of academic and extra-curricular performance imaginable. If you haven’t been there, imagine our stage with a podium in the middle, with tables stretching to both sides. Teachers are seated at the tables and Mr. Bedigrew is our master of ceremonies. I know if you would attend one of these functions, you’d laugh at the news reports about what’s wrong with our society. These young men and women make us all proud.

One award was new this year. JCN has a new scholarship fund that students can apply for; the Scott M. Slava Memorial Education Fund. It’s been less than a year since Mr. Slava’s unexpected passing, but Scott’s family and communities have established a scholarship fund to help a worthy student and remember his love for, and dedication to, education. Scott’s family came to the stage at the appointed time and his son Jordan spoke about the purpose of the scholarship. This year’s winner was Luke Noll. Luke approached the stage to get his award and did something that hadn’t been done all night. He maneuvered his way behind the row of teachers to thank (and hug) each of the family members. That, in my humble opinion, is why there isn’t anything wrong with America these days. We’re still raising kids who, by one simple act, have gratitude and compassion.

We’re going to miss the class of 2008. But I have a feeling we have more coming!
