High School

Career/Testing Day 2008

by Gary Bedigrew

Career/Testing Day at the high school was held this year on March 13. In years past we held this in two days but shortened it to just one day this year. The main reason we made this change was due to all the missed snow days this year. We felt we needed the extra day in the classroom.

The Seniors worked on their Senior Projects which had to be presented on April 4th to a committee of two judges and their mentor. Leading up to the project presentation seniors had to write a paper that was 5-7 pages long. They had to complete a Resume, Job or College Application, two Character Reference letters, and Project Logs.

The Juniors spent their day Job Shadowing a profession of their choice. They spent at least a six hour day on the job, complete an Employer Interview, and write a Job Shadow Reflection. The top profession, which 10 out of 43 students shadowed, was the teaching profession.

The Sophomores and Freshmen spent the day taking MAP Reading and Math tests. The MAP or Measurement of Academic Progress is a Nationally normed assessment used to measure the academic growth from year to year or from Fall to Spring. At this time we test Reading, Math, Language Arts in the fall of the year, a two-part Science test is tested in the winter of the year, and we test Reading and Math again in the spring of the year. These scores are normed against about three million other students across the nation. The scores also give us valuable information on where the student will score on the Kansas State Tests and what standards the students need work on.
