What Career is Right for You?
By Sherrie Wright
February 29th the sixth, seventh and eighth grade students had
the opportunity to have different presenters talk to them about
their individual careers to give the students an idea of careers
that may be of interest to them in the future. The Career Day Field
trip this year was postponed until April 22 due to the State
Assessments. Career Day at the Middle School was an enjoyable day
for everyone, after a hard week of State Reading Assessments.
This year there were eleven presenters. Dana Johnson, from the
Jefferson County Sheriff’s office, presented in three sessions.
Marie Vogel, a Long Term Care Administrator presented in three
sessions. Tiffinie Collins, from Topeka Harley Davidson service
department, presented six sessions. Ms. Collins talked about the
training and college required in all of the different jobs
available at Harley Davidson. Aaron Norris, an Engineer/Geologist,
presented in four sessions sharing ice cream sundaes with the
students.
Steve Parkey, a Safety Manager at the Golden Eagle Casino, presented in six sessions talking about the many different areas of safety his job entails. Lori Scholz , a dental assistant, presented in three sessions talking about the benefits and different areas of dentistry. Kim Hoffman, a veterinary assistant, presented in three sessions. Eric Wildrig from North Central Kansas Technical School presented in six sessions. He brought in a simulator for the students to try their hand at digging with a backhoe.

West Star Energy presented in six sessions discussing safety around electrical lines. They also brought in their truck and equipment and explained how and why the different equipment was used. Some students were allowed to try on some of the gear. The students really enjoyed getting to see the presenters, stating that it opened their eyes to the many opportunities they have in the working world. We would like to sincerely thank all of our presenters for donating their time to help make Career Day a very interesting and enjoyable experience for our middle school students.
